Barrosã

Characteristics

Barrosã is a native cattle breed from northern Portugal, associated with the mountain areas of Barroso and Minho. It is distinct from other Iberian breeds, and its beef may qualify as Carne Barrosã PDO when the specification, origin and traceability requirements are met.

It is compact, with a light-brown to fawn coat and large lyre-shaped horns. Breed-association biometric data report adult means of 418.1 kg and 121.39 cm for females, and 701.04 kg and 134.22 cm for males.

Taste

In a well-finished lot, Barrosã can express an intense yet clean beef flavour, grassy nuances, fine grain and balanced fat. Choose it for a regional menu or for clients seeking pasture-raised beef with a clear identity: well-aged loin and rib served rare or grilled over coals, with shoulder and firmer muscles for roasts and stews.
